How to Prevent Break Ins at Night

Keeping your home secure at night is very important. Intruders want to know who has the best stuff in your home, and where they can easily find them. For this reason, keep all windows and doors locked and shut. Never leave your keys in the car, as it will give a burglar an easy way into your home. Also, you should store your valuables in safe places and put them away when you are not using them. If you can’t keep your windows closed, keep shades drawn at all times.

Another way to deter burglars is to keep your house well-lit. It will give the impression that you are not home, and will discourage them from trying to break in. Keep your doors and windows locked at night. Always keep your neighbors informed about what is going on. Remember that you’re not the only one responsible for breaking into your home, so don’t let anyone take advantage of that. A neighborhood watch can prevent break ins by keeping an eye out for strange activity. If you aren’t a homeowner, don’t leave your spare keys on the front porch or under your mat. Use a combination lock box to store your spare key. You can also use timers to turn on lights and outdoor lights automatically after dark.

A solid door with a strike plate is important. A weak strike plate will enable a burglar to open the door and gain access to your home. Metal doors are the safest, followed by solid wood doors. Hollow-panel doors are the least secure. Many burglars enter homes through poorly protected sliding glass doors. Double-check the locks on these doors and install extra locks to prevent them from being lifted off track.
